The School of Transdisciplinary Studies (STS) is the sixth academic school at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK), established in 2025 to support the University’s strategic commitment to interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary teaching, research, and knowledge exchange. STS responds to the increasing need for holistic, cross-boundary approaches to address complex global, regional, and societal challenges.

The School is dedicated to offering innovative undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that go beyond conventional boundaries. Through cross-school cooperation and inter-university partnerships, STS provides students with unique opportunities for experiential learning, problem-based inquiry, and international exposure. Core programme clusters include, but are not limited to, Smart Governance, Sustainable Cities, Health and Well-being, Human and Social Development in Asia, and Global Digital Transformation.

Aligned with HSUHK’s distinctive “Liberal + Professional” Education model, STS fosters an academic environment that integrates liberal learning with professional training. The School promotes critical and creative thinking, enabling students to navigate complex challenges and make meaningful contributions to society.

STS also enhances collaboration across disciplines and institutions by engaging with industry, government, and non-governmental partners to enrich student learning and promote impactful research. With a strong emphasis on social responsibility, innovation, and global perspectives, STS plays a vital role in nurturing forward-thinking professionals who can contribute to human betterment and sustainable development.

STS coordinates major regional and international research platforms, such as the Asia Pacific Higher Education Research Partnership (APHERP) and the Consortium for Social Change, Well-being and Social Policy Studies, supporting inter-university and cross-cultural academic exchange.

Through cultivating students’ integrated capabilities, critical thinking, and cross-disciplinary perspectives, STS empowers future professionals to address multifaceted challenges in a rapidly changing world. In doing so, the School contributes meaningfully to HSUHK’s strategic goal of enhancing learning experiences and advancing Hong Kong’s role as a leading international higher education hub in Asia, for Asia, and of Asia.
